Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment

In an effort to meet students' needs and interests, school districts have allowed their students to attend courses at local college or universities in addition to their own high school. This is called "dual enrollment."

Public Act 160 of 1996 and Public Act 258 of 2000 created the Post secondary Enrollment Options Act which directs school districts to assist students in paying tuition and fees for courses at Michigan public or private colleges or universities. The following are some of the eligibility guidelines/standards:

1. Students in grades 9 through 12 may take up to ten post secondary courses.

2. Students must have taken and received scores for one of the following tests: EXPLORE, PLAN, PSAT, ACT, COMPASS, SAT, or the MME. Eligibility may be based on a combination of scores from two or more of the mentioned tests.

3. 388.155 Rule 5 (2) The acts do not prohibit a district from supporting any pupil regardless of eligibility under these acts. A district may elect to support college level courses or career preparation courses for any pupil if it is in the best interest of the pupil.

4. Students must be enrolled in both the school district and post secondary institution during the local school district's regular academic year.

5. The college courses cannot be a hobby, craft or recreation course, or in the subject areas of physical education, theology, divinity or religious education.

School districts are required to pay the amount equal to the prorated percentage of the statewide pupil-weighted average foundation allowance, based on the proportion of the school year that the eligible student attends the eligible post secondary institution. Eligible charges include tuition and mandatory course fees, material fees, and registration fees. Eligible charges do not include transportation or parking costs or activity fees.

Please understand that students that do not successfully complete their dual enrollment course(s) shall be required to repay the school district any funds that were expended for the course(s).

If you believe you are eligible for dual enrollment, qualify for tuition and fee support, and wish to participate, or you simply have more questions then please contact Mrs. Materni at 734-850-6104.

BEDFORD PARTNERS WITH LOURDES UNIVERSITY

COLLEGE OF NURSING DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM
BHS/Lourdes University College of Nursing Dual Enrollment ProgramWhen Bedford High School students start selecting classes, they now have the option to request Lourdes University courses, taught at Bedford, that seamlessly flow into the University's College of Nursing Program. This program is unique to Bedford and offers students the opportunity to explore and pursue a nursing degree starting as early as their sophomore year at Bedford High School.

Students will enroll in a combination of Bedford High School AP classes and select Lourdes University classes that will be taught at Bedford High School for the first 2 years of the program, starting in 10th grade. Once they reach their senior year, these students will be traveling to the Lourdes University for their nursing program classes. They will still have some room in their schedules to enjoy elective classes offered at Bedford.

By the time they graduate at the end of their 4 years at Bedford, students fully participating in this program will have earned 36 college credit hours. They will get a guaranteed spot in Lourdes University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. They will be able to get their BSN in just 3 ½ years with a lighter course load during their time at Lourdes University.

This Bedford High School/Lourdes University Dual Enrollment Nursing Program Flyer shows the recommended program of study students would follow during their time at Bedford High School. Lourdes University has more information on their Bedford/Lourdes Scholars Program webpage

Program credits may also apply to other Lourdes’ majors such as: Social Work, Middle/Secondary Science Education, Exercise Science, and Biology. Students participating in the program are under no obligation to complete the full program and any credits are transferable.

Bedford High School principal, Mr. Weber, also has a video about this program in the Scheduling Hub. The Lourdes University courses are listed in the Course Description Guide. If you are interested, please contact your counselor about the steps required to participate in this new and exciting program. If you are an incoming Freshman, we also recommend that you let your counselor know you are interested in doing this in the future so they can help plan out your other required classes for graduation.

We are very excited to be able to offer this unique opportunity to our Bedford students!
