Essay winner group photoAmerica & ME ESSAY WINNERS

During the first quarter, the American Cultures students wrote an essay describing their personal hero as part of the Farm Bureau Insurance 55th Annual America & Me Essay Content. These essays were then submitted to a scholarship contest for the state of Michigan. Several thousand eighth graders from nearly 200 Michigan schools submitted entries in this "My Personal Michigan Hero" essay contest. We received the results of the first round of competition, and, for our school, Kennedy V. got third, Nolan G. got second, and Owen S. had the best essay from our school! They were presented with certificates in Mrs. Fozo's class on behalf of Ben Starr, Sara Steckmeyer and Kelsey Starr of our local Starr Insurance Agency. Owen’s essay will be advancing to the state competition where he will be in the running for one of the ten $1,055 cash awards. The state results will be announced in April. We are all so proud of all three student’s accomplishments!

PROUD OF OUR TALENTED MUSICIANS!

Our 7th and 8th grade musicians in Band, Orchestra, and Choir participated in District Festivals. All groups were also required to sight read and perform a piece of music they had never seen before, with just a few minutes to prepare. The groups are then given a rating on a scale from one to five, with one being the best possible rating, Our results were as follows:

BAND

7th Grade Band: Rating of 2 Overall
8th Grade Band: Rating of 2 Overall

ORCHESTRA
7th Grade Orchestra: Rating of Straight 1s from each judge!
8th Grade Orchestra: Rating of 1 Overall

Students work on a STEM challenge with PVC pipes

Thirteen BJHS students recently attended the award-winning University of Toledo College of Engineering’s Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.

The program is designed to give middle school-aged girls a greater understanding of STEM-career fields through interactive programming. The girls worked with women engineers from local companies and engineering students on a variety of hands-on activities to better understand water treatment, transportation network designs, basic coding and programming, structural design principles, mechanics of propulsion, genetic engineering and cyber security.

It shows girls what the career path for women in engineering can look like, and encourages them to make a career out of their interest in science, technology and math.

New signs being installedNEW SIGNAGE AROUND THE DISTRICT

You may notice some new signs being installed around our district. These new signs are meant to reinforce to district visitors that our grounds and facilities are closed to the general public when school is in session. This is not a new policy (9150 - SCHOOL VISITORS), however, we are stepping up our enforcement of these rules to help ensure the safety of students and staff. Anyone that has school related business during published school hours, is welcome to enter through each building's main entrance and check in as a visitor.

This same School Visitor Policy also addresses animals on our school grounds: “Except as set forth in District policy, canines brought on the premises by law enforcement personnel for law enforcement purposes, or in the case of "service animals" required for use by a person with a disability, no other animals may be on school premises at any time.”
