Screenshot of ILC Award PresentationWORLD CLASS COMPETITORS!

HOSA is an extracurricular activity offered at Bedford High School for students interested in health careers. There are over 14,000 students from around the world at the middle school, high school and collegiate levels that compete in one of the over 80 events to choose from.

These students competed against their peers in various events at the Regional level hoping for a coveted spot at the State Leadership conference. Then they took their skills on the road to Traverse City to see how they fare against the best in Michigan. Students that placed in the Top 3 of their events at the State Leadership Conference earned a spot at the International Leadership Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee on June 22-25, 2022. At this elite level, a team from both Bedford High School took 2nd Place in their event!

Congratulations to Ilana R. and Hussein J. for their second place finish in Health Education out of 100 teams in this event!

Bedford High School students Mollie K. and Jillian M., also qualified to compete at the International Leadership Conference based on their top 3 finish in Michigan’s State Leadership Conference. Mollie took the knowledge of Nutrition to Nashville and Jillian took on the Cultural Diversities and Disparities test at the international level as well.

Jennifer Regalado, the high school HOSA advisor, was proud of her HOSA competitors, "I am so proud of our Bedford HOSA students that participated at the International Leadership Conference in Nashville. This was our first time participating in person at an ILC and I look forward to many more opportunities for our students to excel. Best of luck to Mollie and Jillian as they were graduating Seniors and to Hussein and Ilana as they begin their Senior year. All of these students have served as leaders at the high school and I know they will continue to shine."

These students took the HOSA theme of “Shatter Expectations” and did exactly that! We are so proud of their accomplishments! They work hard, not only in their subject area chosen for competition, but also in community service efforts and fundraising to cover the costs of participating in these events.

BHS Student Published in Teen Ink MagazineBHS Student Published in "Teen Ink"

Wade J., a junior at Bedford High School, had a poem titled “Patchwork People” selected to be published in the national digital magazine Teen Ink.

Teen Ink’s website and national teen magazine are devoted entirely to the writing, art, photos, and forums of teenagers from around the world.

Over 100,000 students submit work to Teen Ink for publication each year, and their editors review each individual piece. If approved, the submission is first published on their website. From there, the editors chose the best of the best to include in their bi-monthly digital magazine.

Wade’s poem is on pg. 63 of the Teen Ink April/May 2022 issue. His English teacher, Mrs. Hertz, is proud of his work, “ Wade is a talented creative writer and his dedication has paid off. Great work, Wade!”

Congratulations National Merit Scholarship Finalist Braden G.BHS STUDENT SELECTED AS NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FINALIST!

In September, we were excited to report that Braden G. was selected as a semifinalist for the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program!

The 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) served as an initial screen of the approximately 1.5 million program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. (The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.)

In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. We are so proud to announce that Braden is now one of that select group of National Merit Scholarship Finalists!

Congratulations, Braden!

Bedford Partners With Lourdes University

New College of Nursing Dual Enrollment Program to Start Next Year

BHS/Lourdes University College of Nursing Dual Enrollment ProgramWhen Bedford High School students start selecting classes, they now have the option to request Lourdes University courses, taught at Bedford, that seamlessly flow into the University's College of Nursing Program.

This program is unique to Bedford and offers students the opportunity to explore and pursue a nursing degree starting as early as their sophomore year at Bedford High School.

Students will enroll in a combination of Bedford High School AP classes and select Lourdes University classes that will be taught at Bedford High School for the first 2 years of the program, starting in 10th grade. Once they reach their senior year, these students will be traveling to the Lourdes University for their nursing program classes. They will still have some room in their schedules to enjoy elective classes offered at Bedford.

By the time they graduate at the end of their 4 years at Bedford, students fully participating in this program will have earned 36 college credit hours. They will get a guaranteed spot in Lourdes University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. They will be able to get their BSN in just 3 ½ years with a lighter course load during their time at Lourdes University.

This Bedford High School/Lourdes University Dual Enrollment Nursing Program Flyer shows the recommended program of study students would follow during their time at Bedford High School. Lourdes University has more information on their Bedford/Lourdes Scholars Program webpage

Program credits may also apply to other Lourdes’ majors such as: Social Work, Middle/Secondary Science Education, Exercise Science, and Biology. Students participating in the program are under no obligation to complete the full program and any credits are transferable.

Bedford High School principal, Mr. Weber, also has a video about this program in the Scheduling Hub. The Lourdes University courses are listed in the Course Description Guide starting on page 55. If you are interested, please contact your counselor about the steps required to participate in this new and exciting program. If you are an incoming Freshman, we also recommend that you let your counselor know you are interested in doing this in the future so they can help plan out your other required classes for graduation.

We are very excited to be able to offer this unique opportunity to our Bedford students!
