ABOUT THE BOARD OF EDUCATION

BOARD PREPARATION

All Board members receive a packet of information several days prior to each scheduled meeting. This packet contains reports, background information, recommendations, etc. for study so that the members can come to the meeting prepared to make decisions.

BOARD COMPENSATION

Members of the Board of Education are paid annually, as follows:
$400 for each Trustee, Vice President, and President; $500 for Secretary and Treasurer

AGENDA

Meetings of the Board of Education in public are for the purpose of conducting the School District's business and is not considered a public community meeting. There is a time for public participation during the meeting as indicated in the meeting's agenda.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

The responsibility for making decisions rests with the seven elected Board of Education members. The School Board is, however, very interested in hearing from the public. There are two places on the regular meeting agenda for "Public Commentary". The first period is reserved for comments related to topics on the meeting's agenda. The second period is open to commentary on other topics not included on the agenda. Please follow the guidelines below.

GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC COMMENTARY

Please see Board Policy 0167.3 - Public Participation at Board Meetings for the entire content regarding Public Commentary

1. Be recognized by the President of the Board.
2. State your name and address.
3. Present your statement of concern or questions to the Board.
4. Complaints concerning school personnel or students cannot be discussed in an open public meeting unless the individual(s) involved are notified and agree (P.A. 267 of 1967). Such complaints should be forwarded to the Board, in care of the Superintendent, unless the complaint involves the Superintendent, in which case it should be processed through the Board Vice President. An open or closed meeting, according to the wishes of the person(s) involved, will be arranged.
5. In order to adhere to the agenda, the time allocated to any one speaker is limited. Each person shall be allowed to speak for up to 5 minutes, except where the number of speakers exceeds the time allotment. In those instances, the Board President may reduce the 5-minute limit to a 3-minute limit. The public participation portion of the meeting shall be limited to one-half (1/2) hour normally, but the timeframe will be extended, if necessary, so that no one's right to address the Board will be denied.
6. The Board will hear comments from the audience but may defer any action or response to gather information and study all aspects of the matter brought to their attention.
7. The Bedford Board of Education pledges its courteous attention to those who wish to be heard. In return, the Board asks that members of the audience refrain from loud talking and other distractions during the meeting.

***PUBLIC COMMENTARY FOR VIRTUAL MEETINGS***

When the Board of Education is meeting virtually, public commentary will be accepted via a Google Form. A link to the form will be posted on the home page of this website on the day of the meeting, at least one hour prior to the meeting time.

Your name and address, along with your comments, will be read into the public record by a member of the Board of Education, or a designee, during the appropriate agenda section of the meeting. Please note that the Board will take your comments and questions under advisement, but will not directly respond during the meeting time. The presiding officer will refer questions to the Superintendent for research and response, as needed.

STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVES

The education and welfare of our students is the focus of all Board activities. Recognizing the importance of our students' ideas, the Board appointed Student School Board Representatives to represent our student community through active participation at Board meetings.

BEDFORD BOARD OF EDUCATION COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE

The Committee of the Whole will usually meet on the Thursday prior to the Regular Board meeting. It generally replaces the separate Finance, Personnel, Policy, and Superintendent's Evaluation Committees. If the Board appoints a sub-committee that would conduct business to be considered by the Board (i.e. make recommendations), those meetings will be posted for the public. The Committee of the Whole is a working committee meeting in preparation for the Regular Board Meeting. Items will be presented for information and discussion, but Board action on these items will occur at the Regular Meeting. All Committee of the Whole meetings are open to the public.

OATH OF OFFICE FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this State, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Member of the Board of Education of Bedford Public Schools, Monroe County, Michigan according to the best of my ability."
