HELPING OTHERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

NHS Food Drive

December 6-15
Even though it seems like we have recovered from the pandemic, many families are still feeling the pinch the pandemic put on the economy. The National Honor Society will be starting their annual food drive next week at the high school with a focus on helping take the sting out of that pinch for local families. Students and staff are asked to bring non-perishable food items to their homerooms for collection. NHS students will be collecting food and tallying points as needed throughout the two weeks of the drive. Homeroom teachers will receive a sheet with point values for various items. The top three homerooms based on points accumulated will receive a Subway lunch when we return from break. The food drive will run from December 6-15. On December 15, the collected food items will be delivered to the Lambertville United Methodist Church, where the Goodfellows will sort and distribute the food to local families in need. If you have any questions, contact Scott Earl at [email protected] or 734-850-6335.

Students in Mr. Sanderson’s 2-D Art and Design class painted a plow blade. The Monroe County Road Commission dropped off a half dozen plow blades at various locations throughout the county to be painted by young people…including one behind the art room at Bedford High School!

The crews that picked up the plow blade said that if this is being used here in Bedford, it is really bad out there on the roads. SNOW DAY!!!

Students with items collected for veteransHELPING OUR VETERAN NEIGHBORS

Baking & Pastry Arts and Business Professionals of America joined forces to help our neighbors and honor our veterans. They collected items that our local veterans need. (Cereal, Canned Fruit, Hostess-type Snacks, Shampoo, Dish soap, Laundry Detergent, Butter/Margarine, and Thanksgiving Pies.) The Baking & Pastry Arts baked fresh rolls to go with their Thanksgiving meals.

The Bedford Veterans Center was very appreciative of their efforts, "The Bedford Veterans Center would like to thank Mrs. Kujda's Baking and Pastry Art class, along with anyone who donated items, for making the rolls for Veterans' Thanksgiving food bags and holding a food drive along with Mrs. Lunquist's BPA class. The students even loaded all the food into our car, which we appreciated so much. The food you collected went to complete their Thanksgiving food bags and also stock our pantry. Thank you so much for remembering our Veterans, you are all awesome!!"

STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET

Athletes from Bedford’s Cross Country Program made the trip to the Michigan International Speedway for the State Meet!

Coach Stephanie Wistinghausen took the ladies team: Rebekah A., Mya O., Emma B., Chloe W., Izabella L., Aubrey M., and Samantha S., to run for Bedford. The ladies were led by Rebekah who crossed the finish line at the 20:25.71 mark. Her teammates joined he over the next 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Reese O. and Maya M. went as alternates.

Gabe B.’s qualified for states as an individual! The clock read 18:07.61 when he ran across the finish line. Coach Scott Earl is proud of the grit the boys team showed this year and remarked that they will all be a great base for the team to build off of next year. Gabe and several of his teammates that just missed qualifying for the state meet by seconds will return to lead the team next year.

Congratulations Elaina S. Individual State Golf TournamentGOLFER GOES TO STATES

Bedford’s Girls Golf had a good year! They were tantalizingly close to qualifying for States as a team…just 3 shots shy.

Elaina S. qualified individually for the State Golf Tournament and represented Bedford there. She finished 81st out of the 107 girls that started the tournament.

Elaina was also named Girls Monroe County Golfer of the Year!

Both Elaina, and her teammate, Lauren W., qualified for Academic All-State, too! Congratulations!

STATE TOURNAMENT

We are so proud of our tennis team finishing their impressive season (including setting a new school record of 3 tournament wins in a season!) with a trip to the state tournament!

It was a rainy start to the State Tennis Tournament so play began inside. Bedford’s 2 doubles team of Carter R. and Taylor B., both sophomores, defeated the team from White Lake Lakeland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in a dramatic win in front of a large crowd to earn the first doubles point in Bedford boys tennis history while competing at states! They also set a school record for most doubles win in a season: 18! Jaxon N. had a tough draw facing the #5 seeded player from Mattawan. He won the first set and continued to battle valiantly before eventually falling in 3 sets. He did break the school record for most singles wins in a season: 21! The 3 doubles team of Zach W. and Mason C. had a tough draw from perennial power Okemos and played very tough despite falling 6-4, 6-2 in their sets.

The team GPA is 3.79, which means this year's Boys Varsity tennis team will receive the Academic All-State award from the MI High School Tennis Coaches Association!

Noah K. was named the Monroe News' Monroe County Player of the Year.

Coach Cukierski was named Regional Coach of the Year and Monroe News' Monroe County Coach of the Year.

Jodi Manore WeCOACH Lifetime Achievement AwardBHS VOLLEYBALL COACH RECIPIENT OF WeCOACH Lifetime Achievement Award

WeCOACH, with partners Hudl and Jostens, are proud to announce the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. This prestigious award is presented to women in sports who succeed at the highest levels in their respective careers, while also displaying an unwavering commitment, pioneering spirit, and trailblazing leadership to empower and pave the way for girls and women in all sports and levels to breakthrough for many generations to come.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX this year, we recognize and honor three deserving Lifetime Achievement Award recipients: Coach Nikki Franke, recently retired Temple University Women's Fencing Head Coach, Coach Carol Hutchins, recently retired University of Michigan Softball Head Coach, and Coach Jodi Manore, Bedford High School (Michigan) Varsity Girls Volleyball Head Coach.

All three recipients of this year’s award will be formally recognized during the 2022 Break Through Summit on Friday, December 16 in Omaha, Nebraska.

“It is only fitting that as part of our Title IX at 50 celebration, we are honoring three longtime, highly successful women coaches who are the epitome of what Title IX has meant to so many women in sports. Coach Franke, Coach Hutchins, and Coach Manore have not only won a lot of contests in their careers, they have established holistic program cultures for other coaches to emulate. What’s even more remarkable is the lifelong impact they have had on the many, many student-athletes they have coached. They are leaders, they are role models, and their legacies are forever cemented. WeCOACH is grateful these three coaches are a part of our Community, and we are thrilled to honor them for their inspirational achievements,” said Vanessa Fuchs, WeCOACH CEO.

About Coach Jodi Manore
Coach Jodi Manore entered her 38th season as the Varsity Girls Volleyball Head Coach at Bedford High School in August of 2022. As of July 2022 she held an overall record of 2175-383-63 for a winning percentage of 84 percent. In 2015 she surpassed the record for most match wins by a high school varsity coach in the nation at 1,833. That’s a difference of 342 more wins than any other coach. Her accolades include numerous Hall of Fame honors including the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA), American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the Michigan HS Coaches Association (MHSCA). She has led her Bedford team to three state championships, five state runner-ups, and 16 semi-final appearances. Coach Manore also holds 24 regional, 31 district, and 16 of 21 conference titles during her tenure. Of her many remarkable achievements, Coach Manore maintains she is most proud of having more than 100 former athletes go on to play volleyball in college.

Bedford's Athletic Director, Mr. Mark German, added, "It goes without saying the tremendous impact Coach Manore has made to the volleyball program at Bedford and to women's sports in general."

Congratulations, Coach Manore!

BHS Students Published in Teen Ink with picturesTWO BHS STUDENTS SELECTED BY NATIONAL PUBLICATION

Teen Ink has a website and national magazine devoted entirely to writing, art, photos, and forums of teenagers from around the world. For over 33 years, Teen Ink has offered teens the opportunity to publish their creative work and opinions on issues that affect their lives – everything from love and family to school, current events, and self-esteem. Hundreds of thousands of students, aged 13-19, have submitted their work and more than 55,000 teens have been published since 1989. The October 2022 issue features contributions from TWO Bedford High School students!

Hussein J. and Alyssa R., current Bedford seniors, had their work selected to be published. Hussein's memoir "The Worn Wallet" is on pg. 10-11 of the Teen Ink October 2022 issue. Alyssa's photo is on pg. 62 published under the pen name L Hayze.

Once students submit work to Teen Ink to be considered for publication, their editors review each individual piece. If approved, the submission is first published on their website. From there, the editors chose the best of the best to include in their bi-monthly digital magazine.

As juniors, Hussein and Alyssa were in Mrs. Heartz's English class when they sent their work to Teen Ink. Mrs. Heartz was thrilled to learn that two of her students were selected for inclusion in the same issue, "Out of the over 100,000 students who submit to the national magazine Teen Ink each year, Hussein’s memoir and Alyssa’s art represent the very best submissions that were chosen for publication. Hussein’s memoir reveals the ways in which a wallet that is passed from father to son to brother serves as a rite of passage and a powerful connection that binds his family together. Alyssa’s photo is a creative piece of art that fits perfectly with the October issue. Congratulations to Hussein and Alyssa!"

Hannah S. Swimming, MHSAA Performance of the Week

MHSAA PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK

Girls Swim & Dive senior, Hannah S., was selected as Athlete of the Meet at the Monroe County Championship Meet. Her efforts there caught the eye of MHSAA…they picked her for their Performance of the Week!

Congratulations, Jake B. Unsung Hero of the WeekBEDFORD FOOTBALL PLAYER HONORED BY NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION

Jake B., a senior, has been selected the National Football Foundation, Football Officials Association, and Mercy Health Unsung Hero of the Week.

This award recognizes senior football players who play a vital role on their team but receive limited recognition for their crucial contributions. The weekly winner receives a plaque, media coverage, and is entered to win a scholarship.

Jake was nominated by his coach because he performs consistently at a high level on the field and in the weight room. He demonstrates leadership through his actions. He is a mentor to younger players and can be found “coaching them up” throughout practices.

Congratulations to Jake on his award. He is an asset to our football program and our Bedford Family.
